ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis,) otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a disease of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. Over time, people with ALS progressively lose the ability to function and care for themselves as the body’s nerves and muscles slowly die.

ALS is a fatal disease, and currently has no cure. Death often occurs within 3 – 5 years of diagnosis.
